As artists think alike…

"You can’t conclude without conducting an experiment; You can’t begin with an experiment without identifying the problem." These are just some of the rules scientists consider for them to be able to create different laws, and these are most commonly known as Steps of the Scientific Method.

Whether you are aware or unaware, definitely, this process is what we all need to pursue a successful lifestyle. I am among those who knew this could be done for real. And I’ve proven it a lot of times, in a way that if neglecting these rules, it’d cause the quality of our lives to depreciate. Now what really are the steps of the scientific method?

1. Identifying the problem (includes the setting of objectives).
2. Gathering of information and resources.
3. Formulating hypothesis.
4. Performing the experiments and collection of data.
5. Analyzing the data.
6. Interpretation of data and drawing of conclusions.

Missing a single step would irrelevantly create a failure of the final results. If you formulate a hypothesis without even identifying the problem, then it would mean it is expected that there is a probable misinterpretation of results, or it would be completely out of sense. Anyway, for me, if for sometime these ideas are being omitted, it would cause some undesirable occurrences as the following:

[1.] The major cause of misunderstanding about common gossips (known in Filipino as "chismis") is a missed step of one of the Scientific Method : the 4th process, "Experimentation."

As we all know, a gossip is somewhat a semi-conclusion of a certain problem. In most cases of extreme gossips nowadays are common to the Filipino lifestyle. Obviously, we could say that there is no sense of conclusion without even getting hold of a concrete evidence, and these evidences are gathered only through a logical experiment. So therefore, as Filipinos, it is important for us to consider that we are actually missing an important idea, and it leads us to irrelevant outcomes.

[2] Relating education, modern teachers or professors rather are unobjective which leads their students not to completely understand their lectures, for a reason that they missed another important step of the Scientific Method : the 1st Process, "Identification of the Problem."

Take note, the 1st process includes the formulation of the objectives. We have to remember that objectives are the basis of the whole process of the method. One example of an objective is : "The students may be able to understand how gravity affects the speed of a moving object." With this idea being set, the students and especially the teacher will thoroughly understand what could be the proper procedures for the different steps. In my experience about different lectures, I may say that the worst I ever had was in our Physics Lab class. Honestly, I don’t get the point of our experiments, since we don’t even understand what our objectives are. I believe so that it is the instructor who’s missing the idea. He should have always explained to us at least the objectives of our experiments so that in our own, we may be able to formulate the hypothesis.

[3] The worst, though this one’s not missing a step, but is still defying the process : Politicians perform the 2nd to 5th steps but outside the ideas of the objectives.

The sole purpose of a politician is to serve well the country. They take care of the different budgets that these will be put on to good use especially for the betterment of the government and the society. But what makes me laugh out loud (lol) is that, these politicians rather use the money for their personal expenses while in fact these were ultimately set for the implementations of different projects. The objectives of their appointments are completely mispracticed.

Was I able to share to you a thought on why Scientific Method is applicable not only for Scientific purposes? Believe me, when I can’t understand why I’m doing some things which are irrelevant, I stop, I quit, but rather, identify another set of problems, and begin to follow another step of Science’s method.

I’ve always wondered, when we speak of senses, do we always mean there’re five? Not to consider the other 3 senses we learned on our Psychology class, which are somewhat related with the sense of hunger (gustatory), body movement (muscular) and the other one which I forgot what the term was . What I mean are those senses on which we human beings never possessed. If we all try think about it, when we interact with our environment, we would only depend on our human senses. We can only perceive things using our hearing, vision, sense of touch, taste and olfaction (or correct me if I am wrong). But what if, there are other kinds of special senses that may have been existing in this mysterious world?

I have a suspicion, the Sixth-Sense or Third-Eye which a lot of people assume that they possessed may be true, but of with scientific explanation. Since it’s not yet proven by science, some people with special senses might really see supposed-to-be-supernatural beings. And coincidentally, these are what they termed as ghosts, which are somewhat ideally for horrifying purposes. Yes! And for such a purpose, it has been a damn hit to the movie industry, and most especially to different folktales and many more.

I don’t know, but when we mean ghosts, we’d really get scared. Even I, not a believer, would still not wish to meet one . When I’m in a dark place, a sound of a scratch would speed me up running away as fast as I can. Anyways, I am not just talking about the sixth sense. There might be a seventh, or eighth or more. Just not ending up in a conclusion.

Later, we won’t be wondrin’ if there are news about new science discoveries. We don’t know, for 5 years more, it might be you who’d unleash the secrets in relation to different senses. Just that, the biggest question on how such a mystery would be revealed is how they are going to begin it with? What devices to use? How in the world would they have an idea about things they don’t even have one? We can’t really tell, before, people say it’s impossible to reach the moon, or it’s impossible to communicate with people who are so so far away. But what can we do now??? Impossible huh?
